What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan. The practice involves the transfer of “universal energy” through the palms of the practitioner to the patient, aiming to promote physical and emotional healing. Although Reiki is said to have ancient roots, it was largely forgotten until Usui’s rediscovery in the 19th century. His system, known as Usui Reiki, focused on healing through the laying on of hands and was designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of religious beliefs

The History of Reiki

Although Reiki is said to have ancient roots, it was largely forgotten until Usui’s rediscovery in the 19th century. Dr. Mikao Usui, born in 1865 in Japan, is recognized as the founder of the Usui Reiki healing system. He was raised in a Buddhist family and received a comprehensive education, which included martial arts and the Japanese form of Chi Kung known as Kiko. His system, known as Usui Reiki, focused on healing through the laying on of hands and was designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of religious beliefs.

The practice of Reiki as developed by Usui was based on a spiritual awakening he experienced during a meditative retreat on Mount Kurama. Following this experience, he began teaching Reiki, and by the time of his death in 1926, he had taught over 2,000 students.



Principles of Reiki

Reiki is based on the belief that life force energy flows through all living things. Practitioners believe that this energy can be channeled to promote healing and well-being. The practice is founded on five principles, often referred to as the “Five Reiki Principles” or “Five Reiki Precepts”:

  1. Just for today, do not anger.
  2. Just for today, do not worry.
  3. Be grateful.
  4. Work diligently.
  5. Be kind to others.

These principles are meant to guide practitioners in their daily lives and help them maintain a state of balance and harmony .

The process is believed to help clear energy blockages and balance the body’s energy centers, or chakras.
