What is Electroacupuncture?

Electroacupuncture is a modern variation of traditional acupuncture that involves passing a small electric current between pairs of acupuncture needles. This technique combines the principles of traditional Chinese medicine with modern technology to enhance the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.

How Does Electroacupuncture Work?

Like traditional acupuncture, electroacupuncture uses needles placed at specific acupuncture points on the body. A small electrode is then attached to the needles, through which a mild electric current is passed. This current provides a slight vibration or soft hum during treatment, which is believed to stimulate the acupuncture points more effectively than manual manipulation alone.

The electrical stimulation is thought to activate nerve fibers, leading to the release of various biochemicals, including endorphins and other neurotransmitters. This process may help block pain signals and reduce inflammation in the body.

Potential Benefits of Electroacupuncture

Research has shown that electroacupuncture may be beneficial for a range of conditions:

  • Reproductive Health: Research indicates potential benefits for menstrual disorders and infertility.

What to Expect During an Electroacupuncture Session

An electroacupuncture session typically begins with a thorough consultation to assess the patient’s condition and determine the appropriate treatment plan. The practitioner then inserts thin, sterile needles at specific acupuncture points and attaches electrodes to some or all of the needles.

The electrical stimulation is gradually increased to a level that the patient finds comfortable. Most people describe the sensation as a gentle buzzing or tapping. Sessions usually last between 20 to 30 minutes, and the number of treatments required varies depending on the condition being treated.
